MCINTOSH COUNTY, GA (WTOC) -A brand new program is being offered to dual enrollment students in McIntosh County.
Coastal Pines Technical College met in November of 2018 with the state board of technical colleges to request the approval of a commercial fishing program. The board approved the program.
The classes will be taught at McIntosh County Academy to dual enrollment students. Students will learn safety techniques, fishing regulations, and more. The college says members of the fishing community came to them asking for help because they see a continual decrease in experienced employees.
“We have developed this program to, like I said it’s the only one in the state, we developed it ourselves,” said Lonnie Roberts, the Provost of Coastal Pines Technical College. “There were no standards or curriculums. We developed all of that working with the local industry. It’s designed for dual enrollment students at the high school, but it will provide them with a very basic introduction to being a commercial fisherman.”
The course will be a four course certificate program, with classes beginning next fall.
